Can chemical peels cause cold sore breakouts?

If you have a history of cold sore breakouts that result from triggers such as sun exposure or tanning, then a chemical peel does have the risk of causing a breakout. This is because a chemical peel irritates the skin and might cause the cold sore to emerge, just like a sunburn might cause a cold sore to emerge. If going outside does not cause cold sores for you, then a chemical peel shouldn't either.
